Guest Speakers
June 12 - Danny Puckett - Emily Fowler Library GUEST SPEAKER Danny Pucket was born and raised in Holdenville, Oklahoma and has lived in Texas
almost 20 years. He worked at Medical City Dallas Hospital for 11 years helping
provide surgical supplies for over 20 Operating Rooms. He was ready for a career
change in 2005 and prayed to the Lord to help him discover the career he
was designed to do. In early 2006, his request was answered as he did volunteer
work at one of the City of Denton libraries. He applied to and was accepted by
the UNT School of Library Science later that year and graduated in May, 2009
with a Master's degree in Library Science.
He is employed with the Lake Cities Library in Lake Dallas and have been
since October, 2009. His favorite part of library work is assisting the patrons
in meeting their information needs.
If you have something you would like Danny to help you research for the
next meeting, please e-mail me before the June meeting and I will forward
it to him. Update: Since no one is booked for July, I
think I will use that meeting to plan for the new anthology. Please think
about how you would like to proceed with this project and the part you would
like to play.
It seems that everyone would like to do another anthology this year.
Due to the varying genres of our members, we will not limit the content to just one genre. Non-fiction will be accepted too. It has been suggested that any non-fiction pieces be related to writing and any aspects of writing (ie, marketing, publishing, editing).
We'll need 4 or 5 editors. At the moment, I have two volunteers plus myself. The editors will read the submissions for acceptance. Once accepted, the submissions will be divided amongst the editors for content and grammatical editing. I'll format the manuscript for publishing. We also need to decide if we want to go through Dan Case or publish it ourselves through lulu.com.
Besides volunteers for editing, we will need to decide on a submission deadline, a title and cover art. I think due to what I learned last time, we'll limit the short stories and essays to 5000 words and the poetry to 25 lines but no limit on the number of poetry submissions. Some of the poetry in the last anthology were so long that it carried over to another page and sometimes over to two pages which made the flow hard to maintain which in turn made the poem hard to read.
The requirement is that if the submission is accepted and they are not already a member of the DWL, that they join since it is a DWL Project.
