GUEST SPEAKER

HAZEL SPIRE was born in London and grew up on the Isle of Wight, England. She came to the US in 1978, after meeting her Texan husband in Iran. More than fifty of her poems, articles, fillers, and stories have appeared in magazines, from On the Line to Woman's Day to Mature Years.

Royal Fireworks Press published Hazel’s first middle-grade mystery, SECRET OF THE SEVENTH GATE, in 2001. She published two poetry chapbooks in 2004 and 2006. A second children’s novel, ARROWHEAD’S LOST HOARD (The P3 Press, 2008) was a finalist in the North Texas Book Festival 2009.

Hazel teaches elementary art in Lewisville, but plans to retire in June and spend more time writing. She has led numerous workshops at schools, conferences, libraries, and bookstore events. For more details, go to www.hazelspire.com

Anthology for 2010/2011 Membership Period

If we are going to do another anthology for the 2010/2011 Membership period, there are things that need to be dicussed and done to make it flow smoother than last time.

Are we leaving the genre open like we did last time?

Are we going to restrict submissions to current members and any who join later? Or, are we going to open it to the public again with the stipulation that they have to join DWL? Last time it seemed rather thin which is why we opened it to the general populace.

We'll follow the same procedures as last time. We'll take submissions and then the editors will read through the submissions to determine publishability and I will inform the authors of our decision. Once we have closed submissions, the submissions will be divided among the editors to go through the editing process.

I'll format the manuscript to send to Dan for publishing if this route we choose to go.

I've learned a lot during the last anthology. All stories and poems will be submitted one story or one poem per WORD or RTF file. After the author has approved the gallery, there will be no changes unless something is misspelled. Last time due to authors wanting to make numerous changes after the galley had been completed, there were some errors in the formatting of the final product.

Purchasing copies will be a little different this time if Dan publishes it. As in most cases, the more we order, the cheaper they'll be, so we'll have to put together one order with pre-payment by the authors for their copies.

Think about these things and let me know what you want to do.
