IN MEMORIAM
Oleta North

For those of you who hadn't heard or who never had a chance to know her.  Oleta was one of the founding members of the Writers League.  She booked all the guest speakers, planned the workshops, and took care of the day to day operations of the League.  She was also instrumental in the birth of the North Texas Book Festival.  She will be missed. 

KRUM - Mary Oleta North, 64, of Krum died Monday, Aug. 11, 2003, at her
residence after a long illness with cancer. She was born at home in Green
Valley Community to R.B. and Marie Phillips on July 30, 1939.

Oleta grew up in Krum and graduated from Krum High School. She worked at
Travelers Insurance in Dallas and later for B. Dalton Bookseller in Denton.
She was active in the Writers Club. She was a member of the Church of
Christ.

Visitation will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at DeBerry
Funeral Directors. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14,
at Green Valley Cemetery.

She is survived by a son, Dwayne Scott "Butch" Nichols of Ponder; her
mother, Mary Marie Phillips of Krum; sisters, Kathy Baileen Coxsey of Mead,
Okla., and Lou Ann Copp of Krum; nieces, Kim Gary of Arlington, and Anette
Gabbard and husband Keith Gaddard and son J.C. Gabbard of Krum; nephews,
Travis Sanford of Denton and Kevin Sanford of Houston; and caregiver and
friend, Janet Teague of Krum.

DeBerry Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.

GUESTSPEAKER

Diane Fanning is the author of two true crime books, THROUGH THE WINDOW (St. Martin’s Press, April 2003) and INTO THE WATER (St. Martin’s Press, June 2004).  She is currently researching two new books for the same publisher.  She is the co-editor of RED BOOTS & ATTITUDE, a collection of 34 Texas Women Writers and author of THE WINDWALKERS, a suspense novel.  Her periodical publishing credits include The Baltimore Sun, Highway Patrol Magazine and the San Antonio Medical Gazette.  She lives in New Braunfels, Texas, with her husband, her dog and her cat.  Visit her website at http://www.dianefanning.com/pages/490990/index.htm .


SEPTEMBER MEETING RECAP

We had the Annual Workshop instead of the regular meeting.  The workshop was called FINISH THAT NOVEL! (Novel Writing from Idea to Bookstore) and was presented by Jim Pence, who also spoke at the August meeting. The topics included; Ideas, Outlines, Story Development, Drafts, Revisions & Rewrites, Synopses & Submissions, Publishers & Agents, The Editorial Process, Rewrites, Promotion, and Royalities.

We all had a good time and learned a lot from Jim.  For those of you who are interested in the Christian writing market, Jim is directing the Greenville Christian Writer's Conference on October 18, 2003.  For more information go to http://www.greenvillechristianwriters.com .
